Mato Drive is a continuation to the project Lisco I did a while ago and now it has finally come close to becoming a reality. I will hopefully be able to raise enough funds through Kickstarter to pay for the first production run.

Mato plays with the idea of being more than just a piece of electronics or a minified tool to carry out our daily tasks. I wanted the the drive to have some substance, occupy more space, both physically and emotionally. An object that would stick to you and you in return could stick to it and so it would hopefully not be forgotten as lightly and left to swim with the fish.

Minified and bony is simply no fun – curves and substance, something to hold on to, that’s more alluring. Cherish the fact of being, and be proud of the space you occupy.

For the skin I have chosen to use a special fabric developed by Danish knowhow and expertise. This durable yet stretchy non-woven upholstery fabric dresses and flows over the components in an almost organic manner. The fabric catches light in a way that is reminiscent of anodized metal creating an appealing contrast between the organic shapes and the metallic texture.

With help of my professor Giulio Ceppi I got in contact with the curator of Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro. He kindly agreed that I exhibit among the Saporiti exhibition.

The photo shoot experiment at Fondazione Pomodoro was to show this relationship between the user and designer. How the narration of the chair will change through the interaction of each user, each added layer.

The user sits on the chair adding a new layer a new growth ring to the story of the chair. The story of the designer reflected in the chair continues through the interaction of the user, using the object to merge these multiple stories.

Last August Gholamali Baluch organized a workshop in Tehran. He asked a group of young Iranian artists to create a visual impression of this intense city, expressing their ideas and inspirations using the language of fashion. The resulting works were then to be put on show back here in Milano as a sort of greeting from Tehran.

Here is one of the outfits that resulted from this workshop. The design is by Iranian textile and fashion designer Marjaneh Abbasi.

In her piece she explored a way in which to mix antique persian lithographs with a more modern textile, such as denim. To her this project was a way to bring art and cultural heritage back into our daily activities, using fashion to add the old colours and patterns to our lives again.

Photographed by me in the streets of Milano with wonderful Mahtab as the model.

The lab encouraged me to get creative once again, C41 film in E6 soup. Since the shots were not exposed for cross-processing the shots resulted in a low contrast deep blue-toned image with a hint of infrared glow. Through some work in Photoshop it was possible to obtain this final look of saturated blacks where the shapes are defined through the reflections on the skin.

Shot on Hasselblad 500cm, Fuji Reala 100 processed in E6 chemicals, post production in Photoshop.

Standing in the street surrounded by the constant sound of klaxons you will hear sudden outbursts of ‘Welcome to Lebanon!’ Shouted by locals driving by in a packed 1970s smoking mercedes’ or from scooters swinging around the streets. In a way this did make me feel welcome in the neighbourhood.

This collection of images was taken during my latest visit to Lebanon in February. Shot on a Hasselblad 500cm, mostly on Kodak T-max 100, one roll of Fuji Neopan 100 and some on Kodak VC400.
